Life affords no greater responsibility, no greater privilege, than the raising of the next generation.
~C. Everett Koop
One of my greatest joys in life has been raising my own kids and getting to work with a variety of children as both a teacher and counselor. I am passionate about the next generation and am honored to work with so many parents who care deeply about the influence they have on their children. I offer a variety of classes for parents and participants always have the opportunity to ask questions and engage in dialogue about challenges and issues they are facing. Schools, businesses, playgroups, PTAs and Mom’s clubs are often the types of groups that contact me for parenting courses. All courses are designed in four session modules with each module taking one hour. I am also available to do a single session on any of the topics below however, the four session modules will go into greater depth and detail.
1. How Mindset Affects Motivation, Effort, Self-Esteem and Success
Scientists have recently discovered that individuals have more capacity for brain development than they ever thought was possible. This new research around brain development and mindset explains why some children achieve far more than we could have imagined and why others consistently fail to perform to their full potential. In this workshop, parents will develop an understanding of mindset and how it affects all areas of life from personal relationships to academic achievement. Participants will learn effective strategies for helping children develop a growth mindset which will dramatically influence their motivation, effort, self-esteem and success in their endeavors.
2. The Impact of Our Words: Language that Helps Children Thrive
The language we use with children has a profound influence on their social and emotional intelligence and in how their brains become wired. This course will focus on the language practices that researchers and parenting experts have found to have the most positive effects for children. Participants will learn how reframing some of their words can dramatically improve children’s behavior and help them become emotionally healthy individuals. We will discuss effective strategies for helping children develop positive attributes and strengths, deal with adversities and increase their overall fulfillment in life.
3. Helping Children Develop Social and Emotional Intelligence
Drawing on groundbreaking brain and behavioral research, this course shows how emotional intelligence can be nurtured and strengthened in all of us. Research has shown that a high level of emotional intelligence in children is one of the best predictors of both personal and professional success in the future. In this series, participants will explore different aspects of how to raise an emotionally intelligent child including how to help children learn how to understand and regulate their emotional world, skills to guide children into making positive and productive decisions and ways to build and strengthen optimism in kids.
4. Fostering Resiliency in Children
Resilient children are able to meet challenges with calmness and confidence whereas youth lacking in resilience often struggle and become overwhelmed when obstacles come their way. In this course, participants will explore the research around what factors contribute to and build resiliency in young people. More importantly, parents will learn effective strategies for helping children face unexpected difficulties and how their daily interactions with their children provide multiple opportunities to help them become more resilient beings.
5. Mindful Parenting
This course draws upon a variety of research related to the practice of mindfulness and specifically teaches how to call upon it during our most challenging moments as parents. Throughout the course, participants will explore how they can practice mindfulness in their daily lives, what impact it will have on their relationship with their children and how to break through the barriers that get in the way of our ability to be mindful. Participants will learn to use mindfulness to assist them in letting go of parenting guilt, to use discernment rather than judgment and ways to develop balance for themselves, their children and their family.
6. Reducing Conflict and Creating More Harmony at Home
In this course, participants will learn innovative ways to solve common problems such as how adults and children can deal with negative feelings, how to engage cooperation and avoid power struggles and how to help children feel heard, understood and validated. Ways to resolve family conflict and encourage autonomy will also be addressed. In addition, participants will learn how to help children improve their self confidence, successful ways to problem solve with children and effective alternatives to traditional discipline methods.
7. Promoting Healthy Sibling Relationships
Supporting siblings in their relationship with one another can at times feel daunting and overwhelming to parents. This course will shed light on ways in which parents can nurture sibling relationships. Participants will learn what causes sibling rivalry, techniques that motivate children to problem solve with one another, strategies to stop sibling arguments, ways to help siblings create healthy bonds with one another and skills that free each child to be his or her own self. In addition, the course also provides insight to help parents let go of guilt and relieve stress that so often gets in the way of effective parenting.
8. Positive and Effective Alternatives to Traditional Discipline Techniques
Multiple research studies have shown that many traditional discipline methods have a negative impact on our children over time and fail to help them become their most competent, responsible, happy and thoughtful selves. In this class, participants will discover the type of messages that children receive from conventional approaches to discipline, the long-term effects of using systems such as rewards, bribery and punishment and how our approach to parenting impacts how our child will relate to his or her peers. Parents will consider the long term goals and aspirations they have for their child and will learn the most effective ways to help their children grow into their best selves.
9. Putting It All Together: What Research and Experts Say about Our Most Common Concerns as Parents
This class was developed based on a compilation of research related to some of the most pressing concerns of parents. The course begins with a look at discipline techniques and the power of language and focuses on the research around proven strategies that have been found to be the most effective, impactful and helpful for our children. Next, participants will learn ways to support our children with the many pressures they face in today’s society including how to help children cope with stress and how to use cognitive reframing to help children develop healthy coping mechanisms. Participants will also explore ways to improve a child’s self-image and confidence and how to enhance sibling relationships.
