Attention

I was sitting at a coffee shop yesterday and couldn’t help but overhear the conversation at the table next to me.  Two women were talking about how the holiday season is always such a busy time of year.

Woman #1: I’m just trying to do what I need to do to get through the next month.

Woman #2: I know.  I’m already exhausted and so stressed out.

I agree with these women that the holidays are a busy time of year so I will keep this post short and sweet.

What are you paying attention to during this holiday season?  Or, are you consciously paying attention to anything at all?  Because here is what I’ve learned about the power of our attention:

  • Whatever we put our attention towards will expand.  If we think or talk about how tired and stressed we are, we will undoubtedly become more exhausted and overwhelmed.
  • Where our attention goes, so goes our life.  If we focus on what we want to happen in life, we tend to get there.  If we focus on just getting through the next month, well then we will simply just get through it.
  • Many people unconsciously focus on that which they don’t want.  Put another way, when we worry about something it is like putting attention and energy towards the exact opposite of what we desire.  It’s like the famous quote, “Worry is praying for what you don’t want to happen.”

So may this holiday season be one in which you pay attention to whatever brings you peace and happiness and puts you in touch with the magic and wonder of this special time of year.
