Like many other people out there, I used to make New Year’s resolutions and by the end of January I was already beating myself up for not having stuck to them. A few years ago, I let go of the pressure of resolutions and decided instead to set a New Year’s intention as well as a personal motto for the upcoming year.
Coming up with an intention and motto feels very different to me. Rather than feeling pressured to do one more thing it actually makes me feel both free and centered. Every year, I set just one intention and one motto in order to focus on what is truly important to me. This also has the added benefit of allowing me to release guilty feelings over other small things that used to weigh me down. I always type up my intention and motto along with some quotes that speak to me about them. I print out several copies and read them at least once a day so that I can continually focus on them throughout the year.
While my intention and motto are deeply personal, it brings me joy to share them with all of you in hopes that it might assist you in coming up with your own new and unique kind of New Year’s resolution.
2014 INTENTION: ASK FOR WHAT I WANT
“You get in life what you have the courage to ask for.”
I have found the above quote to be incredibly true. In my humble opinion, what prevents so many people from getting what they want is that they really don’t know what it is that they actually want and once they do figure it out they are afraid to ask for it. Once people become very clear on what it is that they want in life and go the extra step of asking for it, some pretty amazing things begin to happen.
“As you take one step toward the thing you want, it takes a hundred steps towards you.”
2014 MOTTO: BE KIND
“Three things in human life are important: first, be kind; second, be kind; third, be kind.”
I have a dear friend who embodies kindness in how she treats those who are close to her and more importantly, in how she treats total strangers. She knows that I love clothing with a message on it and this year, she gave me two different tops with “be kind” sayings (my daughter has since become the lucky recipient of one of the shirts). These tops became the inspiration for my 2014 motto. This year, I want to go out of my way to demonstrate kindness. I want to be kind to others and kind to myself. I want to be kind to my body by doing things like giving it rest when it is weary and tired. I want to be kind with my thoughts, words and actions. I want to embody kindness in all that I do just like my sweet friend who I think about each time I wear my favorite shirt.
“The greatest work that kindness does to others is that it makes them kind themselves.”
Wishing you all a very happy New Year – may 2014 be your best year yet!
